Cristiano Ronaldo: 9 of his international records that will never be broken

doc-content image

Cristiano Ronaldo has called time on his incredible international career with Portugal and will leave behind a legacy hard to match.

Ronaldo is bowing out from international duty after 234 caps and 146 goals for Portugal. He won the Euros with them in 2016 and went on to triumph twice in the UEFA Nations League.

A World Cup evaded him, but Ronaldo made his mark at that competition too over the years, scoring 11 times across six tournaments.

As one of the best players in history, his efforts in a Portugal shirt will stand the test of time in the record books.

He boasts plenty of records in international football – and these ones might never be beaten.

Most goals in men’s international football

There are only three men with more than 100 international goals, but Ronaldo is way out in front. He quits 20 ahead of Lionel Messi, who also retired from international football this year, and 38 ahead of Ali Daei.

The active footballer closest to Ronaldo’s record is Romelu Lukaku on 94, but at the age of 33, it’s hard to see him catching up. The same goes for 38-year-old Robert Lewandowski on 92.

We’re pretty sure Harry Kane has plenty more goals for England in the tank, but enough to overtake Ronaldo? He’d need more than 50, so it’s a long shot.

If anyone stands half a chance it’s probably Erling Haaland on 65 goals, but his chances might depend on how many major tournaments Norway qualify for. It’s easy to forget the 2026 World Cup was their first major tournament since Euro 2000.

There’s Kylian Mbappe on 67 for France as well, but it makes you realise how impressive Ronaldo’s record is when you consider he’s not even halfway to reaching it.

Most caps in men’s international football

Ronaldo has been able to reach those lofty goalscoring heights by playing more than anyone else in the international game.

His 234 caps for Portugal are 26 more than the amount Messi managed for Argentina. Third on the list is the still-active Luka Modric, 28 behind his former Real Madrid teammate but nearing the end at the age of 41.

Qatar’s Hassan Al-Haydos is the next nearest active challenger on 193 caps. The Al Sadd captain is only 35, so might end up not too far off, but it’ll still be a tall order.

Ronaldo played for his country for 23 years, after all, and that longevity is going to be hard for anyone to match.

Most international goals scored after the age of 30

Talking of longevity, Ronaldo hasn’t been wasting time at the tail end of his career. He actually scored nearly twice as many goals for Portugal after turning 30 than before.

It probably makes sense, with Ronaldo playing more centrally as the years went on after starting out as a winger.

In total, he scored 94 goals for Portugal after turning 30, compared to 52 before.

Unsurprisingly, it’s Messi behind him in the ranking, with an impressive 68 goals for Argentina after his 30th birthday.

But Ronaldo’s record will take some beating. Only four other players have ever scored 94 international goals, let alone after the age of 30. This one’s probably sticking.

Most international matches scored in

Similar principle here. Ronaldo scored in 96 of the Portugal games he played in. Only he, Messi and Daei have reached that amount of goals in international football regardless of whether they were scoring braces or hat-tricks.

Most countries scored against

Ronaldo scored against a grand total of 49 different countries for Portugal, meaning he had three more victims on the international stage than Messi.

An ever-expanding World Cup might help, but it’s hard to imagine anyone scoring against 50 different countries.

It’d probably have to be someone from Europe or Africa, since those confederations have the most members. But they’d still be relying on the luck of the draw in qualifiers for tournaments.

Most years scored in

Ronaldo scored for Portugal in 23 different years, which is longer than most players’ international careers – let alone for them to be consistently delivering in front of goal.

Even if a player was to make their international debut at 18, they’d have to play into their forties and score without fail every year to surpass Ronaldo’s record.

Most goals at the Euros

Ronaldo might have missed out on the all-time World Cup scoring record, but he does boast the most goals at European Championships.

His final tally of 14 is five higher than the next best, Michel Platini on nine.

Alvaro Morata and Kane have seven each, but will be 35 and 34 by the time the next Euros start. Kane could give him a run for his money, but he might only have one more shot at it. If the next Euros are his last, he’d need to score eight times to beat Ronaldo’s record – something only Platini has done at a single Euros tournament before.

Ronaldo is one of only two outfield players to make more than 20 Euros appearances, so if anyone wants to threaten his goalscoring record, their ratio is going to have to be high.

Most appearances at the Euros

As stated, Ronaldo played in 30 Euros matches. It only takes seven games to go from the group stage all the way to the final, so someone would have to do that four times and more to beat his record.

UEFA have previously put plans to expand the Euros on the backburner, so someone would need to have a near-20-year international career – and do well in it – to come close to Ronaldo’s record.

Most World Cups scored at

Ronaldo and Messi are the only outfield players to go to six World Cups – and Ronaldo scored at every one he went to.

Unless the World Cup becomes a more frequent event than one that happens every four years, someone would have to play for two decades, always qualify for the World Cup and always score at it to match Ronaldo’s record, let alone beat it.
