Former West Bromwich Albion manager Pepe Mel is recovering in intensive care after he suffered a stroke. Mel, 63, had to undergo surgery after having the stroke on Sunday.

The Spaniard underwent a successful operation and is now recovering at Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Seville. Real Betis, who Mel managed twice, announced the news at the request of his family.

"From Real Betis, we send all the support in the world to Pepe Mel, whom we wish a speedy recovery," the La Liga side posted on social media platform X. "We're with you, Pepe."

A product of Real Madrid's academy, most of Mel's career has been in Spain. West Brom were one of 16 different clubs that he's managed over a 27-year period, starting in 1999.

To get it, it's a quick and easy one-two:

1. Head THIS WAY

Mel took over at the Hawthorns in January 2014, with Steve Clarke having been sacked the previous month. At the time, West Brom were hovering four points above the relegation zone and there was growing discontent inside the dressing room.

Although the Baggies survived under Mel, they only finished one place above the drop. He oversaw just three wins in 17 matches while drawing six and losing eight.

Mel was sacked the day after their final game of the season. West Brom sporting and technical director Richard Garlick explained that decision was made due to events both 'on and off the field'.

Mel's most recent position was in Morocco with IR Tangier. Mel left his post in March to bring to an end a brief seven-game spell.

Alongside Betis, more of Mel's former clubs have sent him messages of support. "From Rayo Vallecano, we want to convey all our support and affection to Pepe Mel, after suffering a stroke for which he has had to undergo surgery. We wish him a swift and complete recovery," the Spanish club posted.

Another message read: "From La Liga we send all our affection and a speedy recovery to Pepe Mel. We're with you, Pepe."
