Harry Kane says the setbacks he suffered early in his career have helped shape the mentality that carried him to Ballon d’Or glory.

The England and Bayern Munich striker reflected on the difficult moments early on in his career that played a pivotal part of his journey to winning the major individual honour.

“I had to go through many ups and downs, especially early in my career, when you’re learning about yourself, both as a professional and in life,” Kane said.

“I had to show a really strong mindset when maybe I had setbacks at an early age.

“I was lucky to have good people around me to help me in those situations as well. But there were times it was me and my own mind, me and my own brain.

“I had to find a way to believe in myself. I had to find a way to work harder behind the scenes, working when you’re alone, when it’s raining, when it’s not so nice to be doing it.”

Kane believes that mentality allowed him to close the gap on players he felt may have had more natural ability.

“I found ways to improve and get the edge on maybe other players who had more ability than me,” he said.

“And from that moment, I think it helped shape me as a professional because I never take it for granted.

“I know there’s always someone like me, a younger self, trying to take my spot, whether it’s with the England team or the Bayern team.

“And I always try to remind myself that.”

Even after winning football’s biggest individual prize, Kane insists his hunger remains unchanged.

“The way I train, the way I play, it’s always like I’m 15, 16 with a point to prove,” he said.

“That’s got me to winning this amazing trophy tonight.

“And even now, winning this, already I’m thinking about, okay, well, let’s see if we can be even better and let’s see if we can win it again.

“That will always be my mindset until the day I choose to retire.”
