Report: Spurs to make formal complaint after Leeds United defeat

Tottenham to Lodge Formal Complaint After Mathys Tel Injury in Leeds Defeat
Tottenham are preparing to make a formal complaint to Pro Ref after Jayden Bogle avoided a red card for the challenge that forced Mathys Tel off in the 1-0 loss to Leeds United. According to Standard, Spurs want clarity on why no dismissal followed despite a four-minute VAR review at Elland Road.
The incident has quickly become the central talking point from a damaging afternoon for Roberto De Zerbi’s side. Bogle landed studs-up on Tel’s left Achilles, with the Tottenham forward attempting to continue before signalling that he could not carry on. He was later seen on crutches and in a protective boot, heightening concern over the severity of the problem.
Mathys Tel injury concern grows
There is now real anxiety inside Tottenham over the extent of the Mathys Tel injury. De Zerbi indicated after the match that further checks would follow, but the early outlook was troubling. The expectation is that the Frenchman could face a significant spell out, which would represent a major setback given his growing importance in the attack.
Spurs also appear to feel the match turned at that point. Tel’s withdrawal disrupted their shape and threat, and Leeds gradually seized momentum before Noah Okafor scored the winner in the 79th minute.
VAR decision leaves Spurs seeking answers
The key issue for Tottenham is the process around the VAR decision. Bogle escaped any punishment, and Spurs now want an explanation from the officiating body as to how that conclusion was reached. In a game defined by fine margins, the sense at the club is that a serious challenge went insufficiently addressed.

De Zerbi struck a measured tone afterwards, even after his own frustration on the touchline brought a yellow card and a touchline ban for the upcoming home match against Ipswich. He said, “No, I have big confidence in the referee.” He added, “Nothing changes if he goes to watch the clip or not. I think there was the VAR, and if they didn’t take the right decision, I don’t know. But we have confidence, we have to keep our eyes on the performance where we can improve.”
Our View
This is exactly the sort of episode that leaves people furious. A player ends up leaving on crutches and in a protective boot, there is a lengthy VAR review, and somehow nobody decides the challenge warrants even the strongest sanction available. It is very hard to square that with any claim of consistency.
What makes it worse is that Tottenham then had to carry on without one of their most dangerous attacking options, and the entire flow of the game changed. That is the reality of these moments. They do not happen in isolation. One decision can alter the contest, the result and potentially the next few months if Tel is facing a long absence.
There will be talk about focusing on the performance, and that is fair up to a point, but supporters are entitled to expect basic protection for players. When a challenge causes that level of damage and still brings no red card, confidence in the system takes a hit. The complaint feels fully justified.
The most frustrating part is the lack of transparency. If there has been a four-minute review, people deserve to understand how the officials reached that outcome. Without that, it just feels like another case of Spurs being left to absorb the consequences while everyone else moves on.
