Tottenham sent clear Roberto De Zerbi timeline by former player

Tottenham Hotspur sit rock bottom of the Premier League table and are struggling badly under Roberto De Zerbi

Brighton & Hove Albion star Adam Webster believes it could take several months before Roberto De Zerbi's football clicks at Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites are struggling badly under their Italian head coach.

De Zerbi arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in late March with Spurs in a desperate situation. The north London club had seen off two head coaches in Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor and were sitting in the Premier League relegation zone with just a few months left of the season.

The former Brighton boss had an almost immediate impact and lifted Tottenham to safety with a 1-0 win over Everton on the final day. Spurs then went on to spend heavily in the summer as they looked to avoid another dismal campaign.

The Lilywhites spent over £200million on signings, including Sandro Tonali, Savio, Mateus Fernandes and Omar Marmoush. However, none of Tottenham's big-money arrivals have delivered so far with De Zerbi's team currently sitting rock bottom of the top-flight table and without a win.

But Webster, who worked with De Zerbi at Brighton, has spoken to Sky Sports on why the future could still be bright under the 47-year-old.

He said: “Very, very intense, very demanding, the finer details matter so much to him, repetition until it’s perfect in how he wants to play and his style he wants to implement.

“The football he can play with his teams is incredibly difficult to play against and when everyone clicks and everyone is on the same page, it’s just getting to that can take time and it did with us at Brighton, it took a couple of months, we didn’t win for the first five games. It probably wasn’t until three or four months in where we really started clicking and everyone was on the same page and then you can see all the work that has gone into that.

“Obviously Tottenham are in that period at the minute where they’ve got a lot of new players, they’ve got an identity they’re trying to implement and trying to get across to the players, but it does just take time.

“It’s international break now but most players are probably away on international duty which doesn’t necessarily help them, and then they’ll only probably get a couple of days to prepare for the next game. It’s a process and I think it will just take time.

“It was a lot of time spent on the training pitch, it was the time aspect which was so important, it was the connections you have to feel as players and that comes from hours on the training pitch and the moments in games that you go through.

“I have no doubts that it won’t work there, I think he just needs time. It’s all the new players, last year when he came in it was all about keeping them up and he managed to do that, this year it’s a process and if the players buy into it, which I’m pretty sure they are, they’ll reap the rewards for that eventually.”

Tottenham return to action after the international break at Manchester United on October 10 (5:30pm).
