Carrick's private Man Utd feelings explained by former team-mate

Michael Carrick will feel as if he's "been let down" at Manchester United according to former team-mate Paul Scholes as their poor start to the season continues.

The Red Devils were held at Fulham on Sunday, leaving them with one win from their first five Premier League games, as holes in their squad continue to be exposed.

Carrick landed the United job off the back of his impressive interim spell last season, which saw the team eventually finish third and return to the Champions League. In the summer they made three midfield signings, but missed out of several of their high profile targets.

Their defence was not addressed in the market, owing in part to a lack of finances, and that is proving an issue in the opening games with United conceding eight times in eight games - and Scholes insists his former colleague will be frustrated with how things have played out behind closed doors.

He said on The Good, The Bad & The Football: "Michael must be really disappointed with what has happened in the summer. I reckon behind the scenes he thinks he's been let down. What Michael did last year was very, very good.

"The most important time for Michael was the start of this season. These games now are where you put a marker down, it gives you a foundation for the rest of the season."

United's only win this season has come against Ipswich at Old Trafford and they're already ten points off the pace set by Manchester City. Scholes has lamented their transfer dealings, insisting their new arrivals have done little to push them closer to the title.

"It feels quite sad to say this but Man United are a club now that are not trying to win the league with recruitment," he claimed. "Santos, Baleba, they've brought players in that physically they may be better. Santos played 11 games for Chelsea, they paid £50million for him.

"But he's not getting into the team, now Baleba might make a bit of difference. But again, if you're recruiting at the start of the season for Manchester United, it should be for players that you think you can go and win the league with. I think they're a million miles away."
