Eriksen cancels Wolfsburg contract three months after collapsing on pitch

Christian Eriksen has had his Wolfsburg contract cancelled at his own request just months after another concerning collapse. The Danish midfielder was in action for his nation Denmark back in June when he collapsed to the floor.

He fell midway through the second half against Ukraine and was transferred to hospital, with the game itself being cancelled.

The scenes were reminiscent to those of his major scare during Euro 2020 where he suffered a cardiac arrest. Eriksen was fitted with a defibrillator in the aftermath but Serie A rules prevented him from playing with Inter Milan at the time.

He resumed his career with Brentford and Manchester United before moving to Wolfsburg. But following Eriksen’s latest incident, the German club have announced that he will be departing despite initially having confirmed he will continue his footballing career.

“For us, it was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s. We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract,” Wolfsburg manager director of sport Dieter Hecking said.

“He has already experienced and achieved a great deal during his extraordinary career. That makes it all the more remarkable how approachable and down-to-earth we came to know him at VfL.

"Despite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his teammates, our staff and the fans. We would like to thank Christian and wish him and his family all the very best.”

Eriksen said: “At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together. My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows.

"I know that the club is now in good hands as it aims to make its way back to the Bundesliga, and I am convinced that a successful future lies ahead for VfL.

"I would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported me during my time at VfL and in Wolfsburg. It was a great pleasure for me to play for you, and I will look back fondly on this period.”

Eriksen only joined Wolfsburg last summer after departing Manchester United. He made 34 appearances across all competitions across his solitary season, scoring three times and providing ten assists. But that was not enough to prevent the club from dropping into the second tier of German football.
