Former Premier League star SACKED by Sutton United after nine games

STEVE MORISON has been sacked as Sutton United boss.

The former Premier League striker, 42, had been in charge of the National League side since January 2024.

Morison took charge of a U's side looking doomed in the League Two relegation zone.

An eight-match unbeaten run saw them take their fight to the final day, but the South London club couldn't quite retain their EFL status.

Amid a huge squad churn, Morison guided Sutton to a 12th place finish in the National League last season.

The U's have endured a disastrous start this term, sitting 22nd having won just one of their opening nine games.

Saturday's 3-2 home defeat to Tamworth proved to be Morison's final match in charge.

A club statement read: "Sutton United Football Club can confirm the departure of Steve Morison as Head Coach by mutual consent.

"Morison came in from Hornchurch to replace Matt Gray in January 2024 and stabilised performances at the backend of the 2023/24 campaign, having taken over with the U’s in the League Two relegation zone.

"Under his guidance, Sutton then took their relegation fight to the final day with an eight-game unbeaten run to end the campaign, but were condemned to the drop after a 4-4 draw with MK Dons.

"He subsequently took charge of a massive overhaul on the pitch the following summer which led to a 12th place finish in the National League last term, before a difficult start to the current campaign.

"The Club wishes to place on record its thanks to Steve for his service during his 21-month spell at Gander Green Lane.

"His energy, passion and dedication have been infectious to all, and his tireless work off the pitch in helping reshape the club as a more professional organisation has been invaluable. We wish him all the best for the future.

"First Team Coach, Jon Meeney, will assume the position of Interim Head Coach, with a newly-appointed Head Coach to be confirmed in due course."

Morison appeared 53 times in the Premier League during his playing career with Norwich, scoring 10 goals.

Upon hanging up his boots the former Wales international coached Cardiff's Under-23 side, before going on to land the first team job.

The 20-cap ace was sacked 11 months later, having won 16 of his 45 games in charge.

Morison's next job saw him drop all the way down to Isthmian League Premier Division Hornchurch.

Following a brilliant start to the role, during which he led his side to 18 wins in 27 matches, Morison earned the Sutton job in January 2024.

He departs Sutton with a record of 21 wins, 26 draws and 30 defeats at the helm.

The U's will be back in action this Saturday, as they travel to Brackley Town.
