Inside Mason Greenwood's new life in Turkey ahead of Liverpool clash: How former Man United star has stayed under the radar, why Fenerbahce fans have welcomed him - and his new luxurious gated community

If you're choosing a club to keep a low profile – the claustrophobic fervour of Fenerbahce seems a strange option.

But Mason Greenwood – since being mobbed by fans at Istanbul Airport with his partner Harriet Robson and two young daughters in the summer – has tried to fly under the radar.

From Man United prodigy to club-hopping pariah on a European exile, the 25-year-old hasn't found a comfortable home in three years since leaving his homeland.

A reminder of the why... Early in 2022, Greenwood was arrested and later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault causing actual bodily harm.

Those charges were subsequently dropped but after a six-month internal Man United investigation into his conduct, the club agreed he could not continue to ply his trade at Old Trafford.

Greenwood's attempt at career resurrection took him on loan to Getafe and later a turbulent two years in Marseille before Fenerbahce broke their transfer record to snap him up for £33million.

While there was noisy resistance to Greenwood joining Marseille, he found no such opposition in Turkey, where one prominent journalist claimed 95 per cent of the population would not know or care about his past.

He didn't face any questions about the dropped charges or his public image in his first press conference and outside of brief post-match comments, has not conducted any interviews of note.

Greenwood has been hiding from the limelight a record signing would usually bask in, especially in the football-crazed city of Istanbul.

He found a home in a district called Sarıyer, a favourite among footballers, who largely live in gated communities.

That's the case for Greenwood and his family, according to local reports. The privacy, on-site security and shared training facilities offer a sanctuary away from the mayhem of inner Istanbul.

Sarıyer is located on the eastern side of the city towards luxurious Black Sea beaches and quieter historic towns.

Greenwood is said to count team-mates N'Golo Kante and Marco Asensio as neighbours and was seen in a rare online post after securing his new home, posing with the all-female team of estate agents who helped him with the purchase.

Since the big-money move, Greenwood has only posted four times on his Instagram profile, all of which were generic action shots after matches.

In his latest offering, accompanied by snaps from his different clubs, he wrote: 'From my first professional goal to number 100. Different clubs, different countries, so many memories along the way. A special milestone for me.'

His partner, Harriet, is also selective with how much she shares from their new life.

She only has four posts in total, with around 20 photos in each 'round-up', offering a glimpse into the high-life, though Greenwood himself only appears twice.

One of the images is of him looking exhausted in hospital at the birth of their second daughter in 2023 and another shows him holding hands with their eldest, Summer, who is three.

Greenwood's engagement through new media and traditional remains deliberately cautious.

He's slipped into a quiet life in the suburbs, punctuated by the intense matchday experience at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

So far, Greenwood has made 11 goal contributions in 18 matches for his new side, an impressive return, particularly with the club enduring a turbulent start to the season.

He missed Fenerbahce's defeat at the weekend after suffering with a virus but ex-Liverpool cult hero Dirk Kuyt – who is interim manager – is expecting him to be available for the most high-profile match of the season so far.

Turkey has provided an unchallenging and comfortable new home for Greenwood. For many watching him on Wednesday night, the overriding feeling may still be one of unease.
