Julian Nagelsmann has been warned not to take the Manchester United job amid continued failures in the dugout as pressure ramps up on Michael Carrick.

The German is out of work having left the national team in the aftermath of their World Cup exit. United's season reached new lows this week when they were hammered 4-1 at Como in the Champions League.

Carrick cut a subdued figure at full-time as he waved to the travelling fans with talk ramping up that the Old Trafford hierarchy could be forced into another managerial change.

Nagelsmann, who has previously held the top job at Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, was among those talked up in the summer before Carrick got the job on a permanent basis. He could again be in the frame but his former Bayern boss has urged him against taking up any offer in Manchester.

The likes of Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and Ruben Amorim have all tried and failed to bring success back to United and as the club consider their options Oliver Khan has told his former manager to avoid if the opportunity knocks.

1. Head THIS WAY

On the Sky Germany show Triple - der Hagedorn Fußballtalk he said: "The Premier League and Manchester United have not been known for much continuity in the managerial position in recent years.

"He has to ask himself: What is my next step? Does it have to be the right one? Or do I immediately associate it with an enormous risk like Manchester United, where essentially every manager in recent years has failed sooner or later? You should look very carefully at where you're going."

Khan has also admitted that the Bayern and Germany gigs, neither of which would be deemed a huge success, may well have left their mark on Nagelsmann and questioned whether his qualities are better suited to a team trying to rise up to challenge the elite.

The 39-year-old is on a five-man list of managers who have been privately sounded out should United choose to replace Carrick at this early stage of the season.

The Daily Mail has reported that United's director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is pushing hard for Nagelsmann to be the leading candidate.

United's bosses are under serious pressure themselves as they continue to get their managerial calls wrong, raising questions over their decision making. Since Ineos came in they've backed Erik ten Hag, sacking him shortly after, hired Ruben Amorim, who then lasted just over a year, before backing Carrick despite obvious warning signs regarding his experience.
