Newcastle United defender Amar Dedic was reportedly at the centre of a “major police operation” after he was spotted carrying a bow and arrows near a local beauty spot.

The Daily Mail reported that six police cars were called and stopped Dedic’s car northwest of the city in the Darras Hall estate, around seven miles away from where a member of the public had raised the alarm.

Dedic, a £30m signing from Benfica this summer, and a friend were seen carrying a bow and arrows while walking along a countryside reservoir in the Harlow Hill area on Wednesday afternoon.

The bow and arrows were seized by police following questioning, with officers believing the weapon was “for recreational use” and carried no threat to the public. It is unclear what the bow and arrow was used for, however, and enquiries are ongoing.

Decic, a 24-year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina international, remains available to play for Newcastle when they travel to Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, following a run of four defeats in five games.

The Daily Mail added that, by sheer coincidence, Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Gillespie and former defender Paul Dummett arrived at the scene while police were speaking to Dedic and offered assistance.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 1.55pm (Wednesday), we received a report of two men carrying a bow and arrows while walking along a track by the reservoir on Military Road in the Harlow Hill area.

“Officers attended and subsequently stopped a vehicle in the Darras Hall area and seized a bow and arrows. At this stage, it is understood they were for recreational use and there was no threat to the public. Enquiries are ongoing.”
