Amorim reminded of Man Utd misery after cock-up in AC Milan's defeat at Bournemouth

Ruben Amorim was given a stark reminder of his difficult time in charge of Manchester United when he returned to English football on Thursday night.

Amorim is now manager of European giants AC Milan who travelled to Bournemouth in the Europa League. But it was more misery for Amorim on British shores as the San Siro juggernauts slipped to a humbling 3-0 defeat.

And Portuguese boss Amorim had an embarrassing moment of his own in the first half.

After Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan was sent off for a double-handed push into the face of Cherries star Tyler Adams, Amorim inexplicably tried to replace him without substituting an outfield player.

1. Head THIS WAY

Marcus Tavernier scored from the spot to put Bournemouth 2-0 up after Justin Kluivert had already given the hosts the lead. Amine Adli curled in a free-kick in the second half to round off the scoring.

And Bournemouth fans were quick to remind Amorim of his previous results against the Cherries as the game drew to a close, chanting: "Ruben Amorim, it's happened again!"

Amorim took on Bournemouth twice as United boss, failing to win on each occasion. The Red Devils were beaten 3-0 at Old Trafford in December 2024, before playing out a wind 4-4 draw at the same venue 12 months later.

Amorim has had an up-and-down start to life in the San Siro dugout, sitting fourth in Serie A but 24th in the Europa League standings.

He has stuck by his much-derided three-at-the-back system which ultimately saw his downfall at United. Despite being steadfast in his belief, Amorim hinted earlier this season he would be willing to adapt.

"I change all the time, we need to start with a base, we have two months of work," he said following a 2-0 defeat by Benfica.

"We lost tonight, but we will find the solutions to adapt to these games, because we need to create an idea, but we also need to win, so of course we can adapt."

Amorim was sacked in January after a turbulent 14-month tenure with United sixth in the table following a £250million summer outlay on signings.

He was replaced by Michael Carrick who led United back to the Champions League, but is now under huge pressure himself having won just two of 11 games in all competitions so far this season.
