Michael Carrick latest: Under-fire manager still in dark after club chiefs hold crisis talks

Michael Carrick is on the brink of the sack as Manchester United manager as club chiefs gathered for crisis talks following the humbling 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.

United’s technical director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada were spotted arriving at the club’s Carrington training ground on Monday morning, with Carrick then arriving later in the afternoon, as the club weigh up whether to dismiss the former midfielder following an eight-game winless run in all competitions.

Carrick dropped Bruno Fernandes following the United captain’s criticism of his manager’s tactics following the dismal 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, but the move backfired as another abject performance from his players.

United now dwindle in 16th in the Premier League, just two points above the relegation zone, with the fans at Old Trafford turning on the squad and largely giving Carrick their support following the Bournemouth defeat. Fernandes’ comments came shortly after Lisandro Martinez took aim at the United hierarchy following defeat at Atletico Madrid.

Carrick initially returned to Old Trafford as interim manager – his second stint in caretaker role – after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim at the beginning of the year. He was rewarded with the full-time position after guiding United to third in the Premier League last term but results have dipped this season and the club have now gone eight games without a win.

Former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is currently leading the list of possible replacements, while former Germany and Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is also available. United may also turn to another interim appointment, the same situation they were in 10 months ago.

Possible replacements for Michael Carrick: Julian Nagelsmann?

The former wunderkind of German coaching was reportedly on United’s radar when they sacked Ruben Amorim at the start of the year, but as an option for the summer following the World Cup. Well, that was a bit of a disaster for the former Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig coach, as Germany were knocked out in the last-32 by Paraguay. Nagelsmann, 39, would naturally be interested in managing United and the club’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, previously worked with him at Red Bull.

Possible replacements for Michael Carrick: Eddie Howe?

The Englishman is available after his shock decision to leave Newcastle United in the summer. Howe told the club he needed a break from management but the chance to take charge at Old Trafford, three months later, would surely be too good to turn down if an offer arrives.

The 48-year-old remains highly regarded in English football, and is reportedly the preferred candidate of the United technical director Jason Wilcox, after taking over a Newcastle side in the relegation zone and leading them to the club’s highest Premier League finish in two decades, as well as their first domestic silverware in 70 years.

Howe twice took Newcastle into the Champions League playing an energetic, high-intensity style of football that would be popular at Old Trafford.

He is currently the favourite with the bookies.

Man Utd's permanent managers under Ineos

Manchester United would be left searching for a fourth permanent manager in three years under the minority ownership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos, should they part ways with Michael Carrick. Ineos took control of the club’s football operations when they bought into the club during the 2023/24 season.

Gary Neville attacks ‘nothing’ Man United players for giving up on Michael Carrick

Gary Neville launched an attack on Manchester United’s players and accused them of giving up on Michael Carrick, who is under mounting pressure following the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.

“Michael Carrick is a brilliant man,” Neville on Sky Sports. “He's a man of integrity, of credibility, of decency, of professionalism, of high-quality football and consistency and reliability. Everything the group of players in that dressing room aren’t.

“And he's going to suffer for it because he's not been able to deliver. It's been too much for him in these last few months. He's not been able to get a tune out of them and they've turned on him.

“I know that because if Bruno has turned on him publicly, with that little statement, imagine what they're like behind the scenes.

“If that's your captain saying that, imagine what they're saying in the dressing room behind closed doors when no one's listening. That's horrific.

"There's a few of them that don't go to bed at the right time, don't eat the right things, don't think about Manchester United every single minute of every day, and aren't living and breathing this football club as they should be - and as professionals should.

“Why? Because it's gone to their heads. But they still walk around like King William. They are nothing, some of those players.”

Harry Maguire admits players are 'not doing enough' to help Michael Carrick

Harry Maguire, who stood in as Manchester United captain in place of the dropped Bruno Fernandes, admitted the players are “not doing enough” to stop the club’s slide.

The United fans turned on their players following the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, applauding Carrick as he went down the tunnel before booing them as the went off the pitch.

“Michael turned our season on its head last year and we played brilliant football and got brilliant results. This season we haven’t performed well enough as individuals,” Maguire said.

“We have got to find something, question yourself, look in the mirror, that’s the most important thing – think what you can do more and contribute to the team and if we do that we’ll get somewhere.”
