A Strong Track Record in Transfers: How Bayern Built Its Billion-Euro Roster

FC Bayern not only boasts one of the most valuable squads in Europe; the German record champions also have impressive figures when it comes to the ratio of transfer fees paid to current market value. A recent analysis by Transfermarkt shows how much Europe’s top clubs have invested in their current rosters.

According to the analysis, the Munich-based club has spent a total of 538 million euros in transfer fees to assemble its current roster. The current market value stands at an impressive 1.04 billion euros. This means there is a gap of more than 500 million euros between the total transfer fees paid and the current market value of the squad.

Bayern also invested heavily in Vincent Kompany’s squad during the last summer transfer window. For Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown alone, the club spent a combined total of around 100 million euros. Nevertheless, the Transfermarkt analysis shows that the record champions have achieved a significant increase in value for their current players overall.

Internationally, Bayern ranks twelfth in terms of pure purchase value, placing them surprisingly far behind several Premier League clubs.

Bayern turns 538 million into a billion-euro squad

The comparison with Bundesliga rivals is particularly interesting. Bayer Leverkusen invested 478 million euros in its current squad. Its market value stands at 481 million euros, only slightly exceeding the transfer fees paid.

At FC Bayern, the ratio looks significantly better. The 538 million euros in transfer value is offset by a squad value of 1.04 billion euros. According to Transfermarkt’s calculations, this corresponds to a value-added of 48 percent.

Borussia Dortmund has spent even significantly less on its current roster. BVB’s purchase value totals 376 million euros. Dortmund’s market value now stands at 564 million euros.

Bayern thus remains by far the most valuable squad in Germany. At the same time, the figures show that the Munich club did not assemble its team anywhere near the sums that its current market value might suggest.

In terms of purchase value, Bayern is actually only slightly ahead of Al-Hilal internationally. The Saudi club invested 502 million euros in its current squad, though its market value has since fallen to around 240 million euros.

At the international top, the Premier League’s enormous financial clout is once again evident. Liverpool and Manchester City have each spent 1.14 billion euros on their current squads. This means both clubs invested more than twice as much as FC Bayern.

Manchester United and Tottenham also each have a squad value of 1.03 billion euros. The top six spots in the rankings are occupied exclusively by English clubs. Only then do Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain follow.

FC Barcelona, however, is particularly noteworthy. The Catalans have paid a total of 490 million euros in transfer fees for their current squad. The team’s market value now stands at 1.26 billion euros. According to Transfermarkt, this represents the largest increase in value when compared internationally.

Bayern can still be satisfied with its performance, however. While other European powerhouses had to invest in some cases more than one billion euros to assemble their current squads, the record champion managed to do so with just over half that amount.
