Analysis – Assessing the case for Barcelona reviving their pursuit of Marcus Rashford

The club’s primary pursuit of Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez has encountered a firm, unyielding stalemate.

Concurrently, Marcus Rashford remains a topic of internal discussion following his return to Manchester United.

Given the current deadlock in the Alvarez negotiations and the evolving dynamics of Hansi Flick’s squad, exploring a potential return for Rashford presents an intriguing and highly practical strategic alternative.

The Alvarez complexities

Barcelona’s interest in Julian Alvarez is logical given his world-class profile, but navigating a deal with a direct domestic rival is inherently difficult.

Atletico Madrid have maintained an immovable stance. This prolonged standoff limits Barcelona’s flexibility as the deadline nears.

If the Alvarez deal proves entirely out of reach, Rashford could emerge as the most viable and readily available alternative to fortify the attack.

Unlike an entirely new signing who would require a period of adaptation to La Liga, Rashford is a known quantity in Catalonia.

His loan spell during the 2025/26 campaign was highly productive, yielding 28 goal contributions across all competitions.

His ability to adjust to the tempo of Spanish football and fit into Hansi Flick’s tactical framework makes him an attractive asset, even though there were concerns about his defensive work-rate.

Nonetheless, his familiarity with the manager’s pressing triggers and dressing room dynamics ensures he could provide immediate, low-risk output from day one.

Adapting to significant departures

The decision to decline Rashford’s €30 million permanent purchase option earlier this summer was made under a different set of squad assumptions.

At the time, the club chose to prioritize other long-term investments, such as Anthony Gordon. However, the attacking department has since undergone a massive transformation.

The departures of both Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres have removed a significant portion of the team’s veteran goalscoring presence.

While Gordon and Karim Adeyemi have arrived to inject youth and energy, losing two primary forwards like Lewandowski and Torres leaves a gap in experienced central coverage.

In hindsight, keeping an elite, versatile forward who already produced 28 goal contributions would have offered excellent insurance against this massive turnover.

A pragmatic path forward?

According to recent reports, Barcelona maintain open communication lines with Rashford’s representatives. The forward, for his part, would be very open to a Catalan return, given that he always made it clear that he wanted to stay beyond the one season.

The primary hurdle rests on the transfer structure. While the favourable €30 million option is gone, Manchester United’s desire to offload his wages remains a leverage point.

A negotiated permanent deal or a structured loan with an obligation to buy could still be far more economical than some of the alternatives being discussed, such as Lautaro Martinez and Luis Suarez.

Having parted ways with both Lewandowski and Torres, Barcelona require reliable, versatile attacking depth.

Re-engaging with Rashford’s camp offers a sensible, familiar solution to navigate a challenging transfer market and ensure Flick has the tools necessary to compete on all fronts.
