Antonio Conte reveals desire for next job to be with a fallen giant that has 'lost sight of its history... and make it shine again' - having previously been linked with Man United job

Antonio Conte has revealed his desire to resurrect a falling giant in his next managerial role.

Legendary Italian coach Conte, 57, is out of work after leaving Napoli at the end of last season following a two-year stint where he won Serie A and the Italian Super Cup.

And Conte, who previously coached Chelsea and Tottenham in the Premier League, discussed his potential next move in an interview with The Athletic.

The 57-year-old has been linked with the managerial role at Manchester United in the past.

Conte said: 'If you go to a club where the history speaks for itself - a history made up of trophies, league titles and victories - you can only honour that history in one way: by having the ambition to bring that club back, if it isn't there today, to fight for those goals.

'I know full well that only one team can win every year, but I must carry in my heart, and instil in the hearts of the fans, my players and my directors, that spark, that hope that makes you say, "f***, we can win". You only make history by winning.

'There are many clubs that have somewhat lost sight of their history. I'd like to go to one of these clubs to dust off that history and make it shine once more.

'Clubs where there's pressure, where, ultimately, you know full well that you're not going there just to take part, but to compete.'

United continue to endure a tough period, with the club having not won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson's last season in 2012-13.

In the subsequent 13 years, United's only trophies have been the FA Cup twice (in 2016 and 2024), the EFL Cup (in 2017 and 2023) and the Europa League (in 2017), and they have rarely threatened to challenge for the biggest titles.

Although Conte didn't specifically mention United, his criteria of a supposed fallen giant was interpreted as referencing a select group of clubs across Europe, including the Red Devils.

Another may be Juventus, who Conte previously managed from 2011 to 2014, along with AC Milan.

During the interview, Conte also suggested he would be open to another experience in England despite his Tottenham tenure ending in chaotic fashion in March 2023.

Speaking more widely about English football he added: 'In England today they’re using bazookas, while everywhere else they’re still using a pistol.

'But we also need to be careful about how the money is spent. That’s why we were talking earlier about making the right assessments, about having a vision, because you may well have the money, but you have to spend it wisely.'

Michael Carrick is United's current manager, but they have endured a tough start to the season

Conte's comments come with Michael Carrick facing scrutiny after United's poor start to the season.

The Red Devils have just five points from their first five matches and have failed to build on the momentum generated during the second half of last season when Carrick led them to third place.

Adding to that scrutiny, Conte – who has tended to join clubs in the summer throughout his career – suggested he would consider taking a job in the middle of the season 'if it's worth it'.
