Arsenal might have unwittingly aided Tottenham as their deal to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle nears completion

Arsenal could inadvertently help bitter rivals Tottenham secure a huge windfall by signing Bruno Guimaraes. The Gunners have agreed a £75million deal to sign the Newcastle captain, with Guimaraes set to sign a five-year deal and complete his medical with the Premier League champions shortly.

The end of this protracted transfer saga will not benefit Arsenal alone, however. Guimaraes' move increases the need for Newcastle, who have already lost Sandro Tonali to Spurs, to sign an all-action midfielder as a replacement.

The Lilywhites have already rejected a bid reportedly worth £46m from the Magpies. But the cash influx they will receive from Guimaraes moving could accelerate the North East club's pursuit of Bergvall and lead to an even bigger offer being tabled.

Spurs want a club record fee for their 20-year-old starlet, which Newcastle could feasibly pay given how much money they made from Tonali and Guimaraes' departures. Their need to bring in a new midfielder is also heightened.

A fee of £50m is believed to be enough for them to part ways with Bergvall, but other reports suggest the asking price could be higher. This sum would represent a significant windfall and a huge profit on the initial £11m invested to bring him to the Premier League two years ago.

It is understood the Swede would jump at the chance to join Newcastle, having been pushed further down the pecking order following the arrival of the new central midfield pairing of Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

Bergvall asked to leave the club earlier this summer, as he wants a new challenge after his game time declined last season. The youngster signed a new contract in April 2025, which boosts Spurs' position at the negotiating table.

However, according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, Spurs may have to wait until August 16 to receive a formal offer. Borson, speaking to Football Insider, claimed that Newcastle are purposefully waiting to avoid triggering UEFA's new 45-day rule regarding player exchanges, due to their signing of Tonali on July 2.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi also wants to keep the player in north London, having given him plenty of game time on the pre-season tour. That has been a conscious effort to show Bergvall he is still part of his plans, even if the young Swede will be aware that Tonali and Fernandes are the main men in the middle once the season begins.

Bergvall joined Spurs from Djurgardens in 2024 after bursting onto the Swedish Allsvenskan scene at the age of 16. He has gone on to make 78 appearances, scoring two goals and providing nine assists.
