It is shaping up to be a busy week on the transfer front for Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta's side continuing to prepare for the new Premier League season as they look to defend their title. Saturday's pre-season opener against Girona was an encouraging start, with the Gunners running out comfortable 4-1 winners.

Recent signing Christos Tzolis, who joined from Club Brugge for £34million, was among those to get on the scoresheet. Arteta's men will next face Real Betis on Wednesday, with home fixtures against Borussia Dortmund and Como to follow at the Emirates Stadium.

In terms of recruitment, the window has been relatively underwhelming aside from Tzolis. Sporting director Andrea Berta has only confirmed Piero Hincapie's permanent arrival and brought in back-up goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer otherwise.

However, The Athletic reports that Arsenal are now nearing a complete agreement with Newcastle to sign Bruno Guimaraes, stating there is a desire among all parties to bring the situation to a close. The deal is now on course for completion, with the 28-year-old awaiting Newcastle's permission to undergo his medical.

The club are also working to trim their squad, though Fabio Vieira, Reiss Nelson and Gabriel Jesus all remain Arsenal players for now. Much of Berta's work has been conducted away from the spotlight, and Arsenal are hopeful that progress will be made before the window shuts on September 1.

Bruno Guimaraes shows his class

Bruno Guimaraes shared a picture of himself joining Newcastle's pre-season training camp on Monday amid reports of his impending move to Arsenal, before he was spotted getting back to work at their base on Tuesday. The Magpies skipper has been at the heart of a protracted summer transfer saga, with the Gunners eager to secure the Brazilian.

Guimaraes is understood to have agreed personal terms with Arsenal, having informed Newcastle of his wish to depart, but will not force through a move if an agreement isn't reached between the two clubs. He demonstrated that, and with it his professionalism as captain, by linking up with the rest of the Newcastle squad on Monday.

The 28-year-old midfielder was originally due to return from his extended post-World Cup break on Sunday, but the club were happy for him to report 24 hours later. He duly obliged, posting a photograph of himself in La Manga, where the squad are currently training in Spain, confirming he remains a Newcastle player for now.

Christian Norgaard transfer imminent

Christian Norgaard completed a medical at Everton on Tuesday ahead of his permanent departure from Arsenal. The Danish veteran arrived just a year ago from Brentford in a deal worth an initial £10m plus £2m in add-ons.

Norgaard featured less frequently than he would have hoped last season, registering just seven Premier League appearances - none of which came as a starter. Nevertheless, the 32-year-old midfielder commanded significant respect around the club for his leadership qualities and influence within the dressing room.

He will depart north London as a Premier League champion ahead of his £7m switch to Everton. Norgaard had travelled with the Arsenal squad to Girona last weekend for the 4-1 triumph over the Spanish outfit but was not involved in the match as discussions with Everton progressed.

He was subsequently granted permission by the Gunners to finalise all arrangements ahead of signing a multi-year contract with the Toffees.
