Sky Sports pundit Ian Wright has claimed he has "proof" Vinicius Junior was set to move to Arsenal this summer. The Gunners were engaged in a high profile transfer pursuit of the Brazilian, which ended with the forward signing a new contract at Real Madrid.

It was a fascinating saga for football fans which saw plenty of toing-and-froing during the negotiations. With Vinicius' move now not happening, Arsenal are now pursuing Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez.

However, as Wright briefly started speaking about the Argentinian, he insisted Vinicius was, at one stage, on his way to Arsenal, despite both Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher appearing unconvinced.

Neville asked a leading question about Vinicius to Wright at the start of Sky Sports pre-match coverage of their Premier League opener against Coventry City. After Neville said: "Who are they bringing in?" Wright replied: "This is what I am saying.

"They were talking about...I don't know if Alvarez is coming. Obviously, then went for Vini, I know that was happening, people laughed at me. You two laughed."

After Carragher snapped back: "That was never happening" Wright then replied: "At some stage, Ill show you, I'll show you the proof."

Wright did not divulge what exactly his proof was in regards to Vinicius, at one stage of the saga, heading to Arsenal this summer. He signed a new six-year deal to remain at the Bernabeu instead of moving to north London.

Vinicius Jr was the second big name attacker to snub Arsenal, after Morgan Rogers opted to move to Chelsea for £117m. The Gunners have now switched their focus to Alvarez, which is proving to be another drawn out transfer saga.

Atletico did not include him in their La Liga opener against Malaga, after Diego Simeone stated the World Cup winner was not in the right frame of mind to compete.

After Wright told Carragher and Neville about his transfer "proof" he then added: "That's where we're going. I don't think we need to change the way we are playing, I just think we need to bring in that calibre of player to force it home."

One new signing who is already exciting Arsenal fans is Greek winger Christos Tzolis. His arrival from Club Brugge took place somewhat under the radar, as Arsenal were in the middle of the Vinicius and Rogers transfer sagas.
