Aston Villa Predicted XI vs Arsenal as Nicolas Jackson Decision Made

Aston Villa face Arsenal at Villa Park on Monday with Unai Emery facing several selection decisions after a difficult opening result and a busy end to the transfer window.

The headline call concerns Nicolas Jackson, who could make his Aston Villa debut just days after completing a move worth just shy of £60m. The former Chelsea forward arrived on Friday and is believed to have been registered in time for the Premier League clash, giving Emery the option of throwing his new striker straight into the action.

That would make sense given what happened last weekend. Aston Villa were dismantled in a 4-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion, with Emiliano Buendia struggling in the false nine role. Jackson offers a more natural focal point and should lead the line against the reigning champions.

Jackson’s arrival comes with obvious expectations. He has been brought in to fill the considerable void left by Ollie Watkins, who has moved to Saudi Arabia, and Emery may decide that the quickest way to settle his new signing is to put him straight into the starting XI.

George Hemmings could be the player sacrificed to accommodate Jackson, with Emery expected to retain the experience of John McGinn and Ross Barkley in attacking positions.

Buendia is therefore likely to return to a wider role after being asked to operate centrally against Brighton. Aston Villa need greater presence in the final third, particularly against an Arsenal side capable of controlling possession for long periods.

Goretzka likely to wait for chance

There is another significant change in midfield. Joao Gomes begins a three-match suspension following his red card for violent conduct at the Amex Stadium, leaving Emery with a vacancy alongside Boubacar Kamara.

Leon Goretzka is an obvious candidate after his arrival, but the German could initially have to settle for a place among the substitutes. Lamine Bogarde is instead expected to partner Kamara in midfield.
