FIFA has banned Argentina duo Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina for their parts in the brawl that occurred following the World Cup final.

Paredes has been hit with a mammoth 10-match ban whilst Nahuel Molina has been handed a ban of seven matches. One-match bans have been handed down to Thiago Almada and Pablo Martín Páez Gavira.

Paredes and Molina both copped particular criticism for their reactions after Argentina were beaten 1-0 by Spain in the final in New York.

Paredes was caught on camera grabbing Eric Garcia by the throat and throwing Gavi to the ground. Molina was seen striking Rodri as he ran to celebrate.

Argentina won $34m (£24.9m) of prize money during the World Cup but it has been confirmed that $100,000 (£73,000) has to be spent on anti-discrimination campaign whilst another $100,000 (£73,000) of fine was suspended.

The South Americans had been seeking to defend their World Cup title, which would've made them the first time since Brazil in 1962 to do so, but they were wholly outclassed by Spain.

Enzo Fernandez was sent-off during the game with Ferran Torres scoring the winner for the Euro 2024 champions in extra-time.

In the immediate aftermath Wayne Rooney, part of the BBC coverage, said: "Does it surprise you? It doesn't surprise me. We've seen this with Argentina before. It's just not the reaction you want. We've seen some of the reaction after knocking England out in the last round. That's just sad. If you lose a game of football, be graceful and get out of there. It's really poor from them."

Gary Neville, who was on ITV, echoed that sentiment as he claimed: "They're very competitive and I love that element of them, but [Paredes] has just been a disgrace for the last couple of games, and why the referees have allowed him to continue doing what he is doing..."
