Bompastor thrilled with Chelsea’s reaction against Manchester United

Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor was thrilled to see her side record a 5-0 victory over Manchester United in Leigh on Sunday afternoon.

Five different players got their names on the scoresheet as The Blues bounced back from a 1-1 opening day draw with Aston Villa.

When speaking to the media after the match, Chelsea boss Bompastor was thrilled to have watched her side bounce back to winning ways.

“I think in this game, the big difference from last weekend [was] our strong moments in the game to convert and to score the goals,” Bompastor said. “I’m also happy in terms of we started strong and we maintained and sustained the intensity all through the game, which is something we need to do when I’m talking to you about the mentality, the mindset.

“I don’t think when you are winning 1-0, it’s enough, not in this league, not against all the teams you are playing against, so I think I’m quite happy with the reaction we had from last weekend. I still think there is a process around that.

“Today, I’m really happy with the way we reacted. I’m making sure I’m supporting the players with that mindset mentality, making sure we keep this intensity as much as possible. If we are able to do that, we are a completely different team.”

Keira Walsh scored a wonder-strike, got an assist and was also named Player of the Match and Bompastor had a lot of praise for the midfielder.

She said “I’m really happy with Keira. I think she’s one of these players and leaders in my team who really sets the tone for the way we want to play. She controls and manages the game in a perfect way in terms of how I want the team to play in possession of the ball.

“I think we are already encouraging her to also take that opportunity from the edge of the box. She has a great shot, it’s her being confident and today, she was unbelievable.”

Bompastor’s side were relentless and she highlighted the importance of having depth within her squad.

She said “I think it’s important to be unpredictable, so you can do that with sometimes having depth in your squad, having different profiles who can come in and impact the game. You can do that using different systems. I think I’ve always said, I want to be a team that is able to play in two different systems, not because I want to play with the team, just because I think it’s good for us to be able to play in those systems to be more unpredictable.

“There are many ways to do that, that’s something we are trying to do. That’s important because I think now, the tactics are so observed by everyone. We know everything about the other teams; we can watch the games, we have the statistics, so we know everything. When you can be a little bit unpredictable, that’s good and when you can have the players who are still impacting the game, no matter what is happening on the pitch, I think it’s even better.”

Chelsea are next in action when they take on Birmingham City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
