Manchester United are interested in signing
Carlos Augusto
, but face competition from two Italian rivals for the Inter Milan wideman, according to Ben Jacobs.
Despite
Luke Shaw
managing to start every Premier League match last season, INEOS remain intent on reinforcing the left-back position. The 30-year-old Englishman, who was desperately unlucky to miss out on England’s squad for the World Cup, has suffered an unending list of injuries since arriving at Old Trafford in 2013.
With the increased workload of Champions League football and deeper runs in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, Shaw will not be able to handle playing two or even three games a week.
Patrick Dorgu
is an obvious alternative to provide cover. But the
Denmark
international has been redeployed as a rampaging winger by Michael Carrick, scoring in each of his three starts under the 44-year-old head coach.
If Dorgu’s future remains stationed further forward, a new left-back will be a priority ahead of next season. However, the ongoing injury concern over Matthijs de Ligt, who has not featured since November, means a new centre-back may also be needed.
With this dual need in mind, it makes sense that United have explored a deal to sign Augusto, who has been described as a Swiss Army knife due to his versatility.
Having joined Inter Milan in 2023, initially on loan before sealing a permanent switch a year later, Augusto has won two Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia with
I Nerazzurri
.
The Brazil international is a full-back by trade and operates on the left-hand side. However, he has played as a wing-back, a winger, and even in central defence at the San Siro.
This adaptability has made him an excellent squad option for manager Christian Chivu as well as his predecessor, Simone Inzaghi. The 27-year-old has averaged 33 appearances across his three seasons in Milan.
Ben Jacobs reveals
Manchester United
, spearheaded by sporting director Jason Wilcox, “made an enquiry” in April to gauge whether a deal would be possible this summer, though Inter do not want to lose the São Paulo native.
Speaking to the
United Stand
, Jacobs claims AS Roma and Atalanta are two other suitors for Augusto, presenting United with another challenge to overcome should they escalate their interest in the defender.
Augusto would provide an alternative to Shaw with a wealth of experience at the highest level, while also offering depth at centre-back and even further forward if needed. In short, an excellent signing for the squad as much as the starting XI.
The
talkSPORT
reporter also states West Ham United full-back Oliver Scarles is another option who has been considered, though he notes this is “not developing” as the Red Devils’ “main priority” is finding a starter at left-back.
