Jamie Carragher has dodged bankruptcy, having settled an unpaid tax bill with HMRC. Judge Nicholas Briggs dismissed a petition filed against the former footballer on Tuesday, October 13, at the Insolvency and Companies Court.

Said petition was issued in August, but Kevin Hassan of HMRC has now confirmed that outstanding fees owed by Carragher have been paid. No exact figure was mentioned in court.

When the petition emerged a matter of months ago, a spokesperson for the 48-year-old was quick to explain that matters would be dealt with in swift fashion. They explained at the time: "This is a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and the appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it. It is understood that the matter will not proceed any further, and will be resolved imminently."

Mirror Football also reached out to HMRC at the time, who declined to comment on individual cases. A spokesperson said: "We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort."

Carragher, who was born and raised in Bootle, spent the entirety of his professional football career playing for Liverpool. Having broke through the club's youth system in 1996, the versatile defender went on to make 737 appearances for the Reds.

That puts him as the club's second-highest appearance maker of all time, following Ian Callaghan - who played 857 games for Liverpool between 1959 and 1978. During his time at Anfield, Carragher lifted two FA Cups, three League Cups, a UEFA Cup and a Champions League.

He also made 38 appearances for England between 1999 and 2010, albeit, was limited to game time as a result of the nation's 'Golden Generation' picking itself on paper; the likes of Rio Ferdinand and John Terry preferred at centre-half, while Ashley Cole and Gary Neville predominantly occupying full-back positions.

Having retired in 2013, Carragher has since crafted a respectable career as a football pundit, working with the likes of Sky Sports, TNT and CBS over the years. He is also a regular on Stick to Football podcast alongside Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott.

It comes as Carragher has found himself wrapped up in a bitter social media feud with Piers Morgan over the past couple of days, stemming from Cristiano Ronaldo's exit from the Portuguese national team.

Carragher labelled Morgan's defence of the Al-Nassr striker 'embarrassing,' with Morgan highlighting their spat on his Uncensored show.

The journalist said: "Jamie Carragher and I had an interesting little spat at the weekend fuelled by Carragher saying that Rio Ferdinand and I had been embarrassing defending Cristiano Ronaldo because we’re friends of his.

"And Carragher, as we might remember, got pied live on Sky by Ronaldo, who refused to even acknowledge his existence which might be why he’s being such a big baby about it."
