Carrick gives Rashford injury update after Man Utd star hobbles off at Fulham

Marcus Rashford had to be substituted during Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Fulham on Sunday due to an "issue", according to Michael Carrick.

Rashford appeared to be holding his groin and limping slightly as he exited the pitch to be replaced by Joshua Zirkzee in the 77th minute as Carrick's first change. United were in search of a goal following Lisandro Martinez's shambolic own goal in the 63rd minute.

Matheus Cunha's heavily deflected equaliser came in the 89th minute, rescuing a point and saving some face for Carrick, who is under mounting pressure as manager having picked up just one win from their opening five Premier League games.

United now go into a lengthy international break, with their next game not until October 10 against Tottenham, but news of an injury to Rashford is still a worry. "We had to bring him off as he had a bit of an issue," Carrick told beIN Sports. Asked if he was alright, he replied: "I'm not sure."

Rashford has been called up for England duty by Thomas Tuchel. It remains to be seen whether he will be available for England's four Nations League games in this extended international break against Spain (home), Czechia (away), Croatia (away) and Czechia (home).

The 28-year-old is yet to score or contribute an assist in six appearances totalling 435 minutes of action for United this season, but his manager defended his efforts post-match.

"Marcus was a threat," Carrick said. "He could have had a couple of goals for us today. He's another one who is getting himself in good positions, it's just not quite falling for him. It will. We know Marcus. We know how to get the best out of him and will continue to do that."

With Benjamin Sesko not in the squad, Zirkzee came on to replace Rashford before Mason Mount and Patrick Dorgu also climbed off the bench late on. With United chasing a goal, Sesko's absence was an obvious blow.

Carrick said: "We’re not sure with Ben yet, he felt some pain after the [Brighton] game and we are assessing him at the moment. He definitely wasn’t ready for today. I haven’t got any more news to give you, just that he felt pain on his shin."

The United boss also gave injury updates on Amad Diallo and Matthijs de Ligt following the game in west London. "It was good to have Carlos [Baleba] today [on the bench]," he told MUTV.

"Amad, hopefully by the time we get back [after the international break], he will have trained with the group. That's a positive. Matta is working towards his fitness as well."
