Carrick made two baffling substitutions that cost Man Utd dearly

Manchester United lost a Derby they they should have won, and many would argue Michael Carrick deserves a chunk of the blame.

Nine months ago, the 45-year-old began his MUFC stint with an enchanting victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford.

However, the English manager failed to replicate this feat on Sunday, despite the favourable circumstances.

23 minutes into the game, Phil Foden was given his marching orders after reacting to Bruno Fernandes’ rash kick with an upkick of his own.

This meant that United had a numerical advantage for the bulk of the match. And yet, they couldn’t find the back of the net, only hitting the post on two occasions through Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo.

On the contrary, Manchester City pounced on Patrick Dorgu’s poor clearance to seize the lead thanks to Erling Haaland’s controversial goal.

While almost all refereeing experts concluded that the goal should have been ruled out due to Enzo Fernandez’s offside position, the VAR decided to allow it.

Nevertheless, Man Utd shouldn’t have placed their fate in the match officials’ hands in the first place.

For his part, The Atheltic’s Laurie Whitwell argued that Carrick didn’t help his case by delaying Benjamin Sesko’s introduction, only to bring him in place of Youri Tielemans, which reduced United’s control in the centre of the park.

“It took seven minutes for Benjamin Sesko to get onto the pitch after Haaland’s goal — when his introduction at the interval seemed to make sense,” wrote the journalist.

“And United’s balance was upset by Tielemens going off.”

On another note, Whitwell felt that Joshua Zirkzee should have come in for Matheus Cunha instead of Marcus Rashford, who was the better player on Sunday.

“Rashford had also been playing better than Matheus Cunha, who stayed on for the duration.”

Any time a team loses a game to an arch-rival while playing with an extra man the manager will finds himself in the hot seat.

But as Whitwell argued in his piece, Enzo Maresca was able to bring in his new £65m signing Iliman Ndiaye in the second half, while his MUFC counterpart had to resort to Zirkzee, a player he unsuccessfully tried to offload in the summer.

This simple yet telling observation is enough to depict the contrasting situations at both clubs, with the Cityzens capable of spending large sums to fill the gaps in the squad, while the Reds failing to address some of their basic issues, including the left-back role and the back-up striker.

So while Carrick could have done better with the cards at his disposal, Man Utd’s unsatisfactory summer transfer campaign has already returned to haunt them.
