Chelsea told what they must do to win the Premier League after Brighton win

Chelsea beat Brighton & Hove Albion 4-3 in an enthralling Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Chelsea raced into a three-goal lead before Brighton reduced the deficit to 3-2. Pedro Neto restored the Blues’ two-goal advantage, but Pascal Gross pulled another goal back for Brighton.

The result marked the second time the Blues had almost thrown away a comfortable lead, having beaten Fulham 3-2 in their first league game.

Reacting to the result, pundit Glenn Murray said the West London side must learn how to control games to win the league title.

“Xabi Alonso will definitely want better game management, “he told The BBC.

“There is no way on earth, when you are 3-0 up after 32 minutes, this game should ever be in the balance at any point. They should have blown Brighton away.

“Chelsea had 26% possession at home. The group can control games way better than that. It was almost too easy at times. They will not go anywhere near winning the league playing like that. They need to control games better if they want to progress.”

Xabi Alonso’s side had less possession against Fulham and Brighton, which is one reason they found it difficult to see out both games comfortably.

They registered just 26 percent possession against Brighton and completed just 146 passes, their lowest on record for both metrics in a top-flight fixture since the 2003/04 season.

Following goalkeeper Robert Sanchez’s poor display against Fulham, Chelsea have signed Emiliano Martinez to replace him. The Argentine made his debut against Brighton.

Martinez’s experience, leadership and shot-stopping ability should give Chelsea greater confidence at the back, while improving their ability to see out games.

However, Alonso’s side will also need to become more comfortable controlling matches if they are to mount a serious title challenge.

Chelsea are back in action next Sunday when they face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
