Cristian Romero is open to the idea of joining Premier League rivals Arsenal

Arsenal have been handed an unexpected opportunity in their search for defensive reinforcement, with Cristian Romero reportedly open to crossing the north London divide. Mikel Arteta needs another proven centre-back because William Saliba’s injury has created uncertainty at the heart of the defence ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League title defence.

The Gunners have already made a major statement this summer by completing the £75 million signing of Bruno Guimarães, but their business is not finished, with another defender and forward still wanted.

Romero would provide aggression, leadership and Premier League experience, although Tottenham’s refusal to strengthen their biggest rival makes a deal extremely difficult.

Tottenham captain is open to Arsenal move

According to The Sun, Romero would be interested in joining Arsenal if an agreement could somehow be reached.

Tottenham, however, have no intention of allowing their captain to move directly to the Emirates and would prefer to sell him abroad.

That stance is understandable given the rivalry and the memories of Sol Campbell’s controversial switch more than two decades ago.

Arsenal’s interest makes footballing sense because Romero can defend aggressively in a high line, dominate physical battles and step forward to win possession, qualities that could help cover Saliba’s absence.

Tottenham have already prepared for the possibility of losing Romero by signing Jan Paul van Hecke, but that does not mean they will help Arsenal solve their own defensive problem.

Atletico or Inter move looks more likely

Arsenal’s summer has already accelerated with Guimarães arriving from Newcastle, while The Guardian reports that Arteta still wants defensive and attacking reinforcement before the window closes.

Romero would provide immediate quality rather than another developmental option.

However, Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan are also pursuing the Argentina international.

Their involvement actually suits Tottenham because selling abroad avoids the embarrassment of strengthening Arsenal.

Atlético in particular could make another bid, while Inter remain another realistic destination.

Arsenal should explore the possibility without allowing it to consume their window.

Romero would be an outstanding short-term answer to Saliba’s absence and a genuine competitor when everyone is fit.

But Spurs are unlikely to change their stance unless Arsenal offer an extraordinary premium.
