“Deal off” – BBC journalist confirms Man Utd dealt late-summer transfer blow

Manchester United’s hopes of sending Joshua Zirkzee to Fiorentina have been shattered, so they must find an alternative solution in the next 24 hours.

The Dutchman showed promising glimpses in the first few summer friendlies, but Michael Carrick has kept him on the bench during the first two Premier League fixtures of the season against Hull and Ipswich, even with Benjamin Sesko unfit to start.

Therefore, the writing is on the wall for Zirkzee, who must leave Carrington to put his career back in order.

Thanks to his exploits at Bologna between 2022 and 2024, the versatile forward remains highly regarded in Italy, with a host of Serie A clubs placing him on their shortlist.

Over the past few days, Fiorentina emerged as the frontrunners in the race for Zirkzee’s services, as they intend to replace Moise Kean, who is all set to join Como in the coming hours.

But according to BBC’s Man Utd correspondent Simon Stone, the Dutch player’s move to Florence is off, with the Tuscan club now working on recruiting Everton striker Beto.

This corresponds with the overnight updates provided by Fabrizio Romano, who revealed that Man Utd turned down Fiorentina’s offer of €5 million in loan fees plus an option to buy for €25 million.

While the Red Devils were willing to accept better terms, it appears that Zirkzee himself rejected the destination, perhaps deterred by Fiorentina’s early-season struggles. The Viola started their Serie A campaign with two heavy defeats to Roma on the road (1-4) and Frosinone at home (0-3).

What’s next for Zirkzee & Man Utd?

With a move to Florence no longer on the table, United and Zirkzee will be hoping for a swift solution with time running out.

In recent hours, Zirkzee’s longtime admirers have reportedly made an attempt to recruit him. However, this move is predicated on Jonathan David’s departure from Turin (potentially to Atletico Madrid).

Moreover, the Bianconeri are said to be examining other profiles, including Newcastle benchwarmer Nick Woltemade.

Therefore, it remains to be seen if the Netherlands international will end up sealing a deadline-day move to Juventus.
