England have been handed a fitness boost ahead of their
World Cup
semi-final against
Argentina
, with
Declan Rice
expected to recover in time to start Wednesday’s blockbuster clash in Atlanta.
According to
The Times
, the
Arsenal
midfielder has made significant progress after battling a stomach illness that disrupted his preparations for the quarter-final victory over Norway.
Rice has rejoined the squad after no longer needing to isolate and is now closing in on full fitness.
The 27-year-old endured a difficult few days before England’s last-eight tie, spending almost three days confined to bed with what is believed to have been food poisoning.
Despite being far from his best physically,
Rice
insisted on playing and started against Norway before being replaced at half-time after an understandably subdued display.
England boss Thomas Tuchel admitted after the match that his vice-captain had little chance of lasting the full contest.
Rice’s illness added to the ongoing discomfort from nerve-related issues affecting his hamstring and lower back.
Unsurprisingly, it has raised concerns about his availability for England’s biggest match since reaching the 2018
semi-finals.
Those fears have now largely disappeared, with Rice expected to resume his midfield partnership with Elliot Anderson as
England
attempt to book a place in the final against
.
If he features, Rice will earn his 79th senior international cap for the
Three Lions
England are also monitoring Ezri Konsa after the Aston Villa defender was forced off with a cramp against Norway.
However, he remains in contention to retain his place, although Reece James is pushing for a recall after an encouraging cameo from the bench.
Bukayo Saka also strengthened his case for a starting berth after making a positive impact as a substitute in the quarter-final.
Tuchel has a welcome selection headache ahead of a defining night in Atlanta.
