Dominic Calvert-Lewin: Happy to be off the mark

Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened his account for the new Premier League campaign with a late strike against Brentford to help secure a draw for his team.

Behind with just over 10 minutes remaining, the 29-year-old was on hand to bundle home Lukas Nmecha’s cross, sparking great scenes at Elland Road.

“It was a very, very tough game. We knew it was going to be a very tough test,” the forward told the media after the full-time whistle.

“They are very pragmatic, they play second balls, high energy, and we knew we would have to match that and more. I think first half we struggled.

“We were just half a yard off and then second half it was, you know, completely different and we worked our way back into the game so we can be proud of ourselves.

“We changed the system and it just seemed to get us a better foothold in the game and we could dictate the play more. I think a draw is probably a fair result in the end.”

Discussing the goal which saw the England international open his account for the new campaign, the striker added: “In the six-yard box, that is my territory.

“So I have to be there for when the ball arrives and I was today, so happy to be off the mark and long may continue.

“I think we just have to look to build on last season, take it step by step and week by week. It is always cliché but personally I don’t like to look too far ahead anyway.

“We just have to focus on what we can control and keep bringing our quality through. We have got the experience of last season that we have to use.”
