Ex-Tottenham defender Aurier to drop down to SEVENTH tier with shock move

Ex-Tottenham defender Serge Aurier is set to join a club in France's seventh tier as the 33-year-old's career plumbs new depths.

The Ivorian previously spent four years in north London after playing for PSG. He was part of the Tottenham side that were regularly in the top-four mix and also helped the club reach the Champions League final in 2019.

However the full-back, who has been a free agent since leaving Iranian side Persepolis earlier this year, is in talks to move to French minnows Montigny-en-Gohelle, who are based close to Ligue 1 side Lens.

They play in the second division of the Hauts-de-France regional league, which is the equivalent of the Isthmian League Premier Division in England, but the team clearly have their issues. Aurier will hope to sure up their backline if he does indeed join with the team conceding TEN goals at the weekend to rivals Biache-Saint-Vaast.

Aurier’s move is reportedly being held up due to delays with documents from the Iranian FA, but sources have told local paper La Voix du Nord they expect him to get the green light to sign.

Aurier is already making plans for after football and has reunited with Lens, the club where he first emerged. He has recently been appointed their Under-15 coach, but is keen to remain playing for now.

After coming through the ranks at Lens he moved to Toulouse and then got his big break with PSG, joining them initially on loan before signing permanently. It was his performances in Paris that caught Tottenham's attention and he would play under Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho.

After a year with Villarreal, he returned to the Premier League to be part of Nottingham Forest's survival bid and spent two years at the City Ground with the club re-establishing themselves in the top flight.

Across the course of his career, Aurier has won 11 trophies with PSG. He's also claimed glory with Galatasaray, helping them win the Super Lig title in 2024. On the international scene, the full-back has twice been part of Ivory Coast sides that won the Africa Cup of Nations.
