Ex-West Brom star dies, 25, after collapsing during friendly match

Former West Bromwich Albion star, Quevin Castro, died at the age of 25 on Saturday morning, after collapsing on the pitch during a match for Real Massama. Reports claim that the central midfielder played just 10 minutes against Estrela de Amadora at the Estadio das Seixas, before falling to the ground.

Medical teams from both sides rushed onto the pitch to assist Castro, with A Bola explaining that a defibrillator was used. Unfortunately, attempts to resuscitate the Portuguese talent were unsuccessful.

Healthcare professionals were also quick to the scene to provide treatment, with Castro being rushed to hospital. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, Castro was declared dead at the hospital.

The match between Real Massama and Estrela de Amadora was subsequently postponed, with the latter club releasing a statement confirming the tragic news. It read: "Estrela da Amadora hereby expresses its deepest sorrow for the passing of Quevin Castro, player for Real Massama.

"At this moment of profound sadness, Estrela da Amadora extends its most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Quevin Castro, as well as to the entire Real Massamá structure.

"Our thoughts are with all those close to him. Rest in peace, Quevin."

A number of others also took to social media to share tributes to the midfielder. Lucha Libre wrote: "We regret to inform of the passing of Quevin Castro at the age of 25.

"Quevin Castro, who played for West Bromwich Albion, tragically passed away after suffering a health issue during a preseason friendly match between his club, Real Sport Clube, and Estrela da Amadora in Malveira, Portugal.

"In the 10th minute, he indicated that he felt unwell. He passed away. He did not arrive alive at the hospital. Our condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace."

Another user wrote: "I used to be a big fan of Castro, used to post loads about him back in 2021 when we signed him. Horrible news to hear, my thoughts and prayers go out to all of his friends and family. Rest in peace Quevin Castro."

A third said: "Former West Bromwich Albion player Quevin Castro has passed away aged 25. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family during this extremely difficult time. RIP, Quevin."

Castro's former club in Eastbourne Borough also wrote: "#EBFC are devastated to learn of the passing of former player Quevin Castro. Our thoughts are with Quevin's family during this extremely difficult time. Rest in Peace, Quevin."

A product of the Sporting CP youth academy, Castro signed his first professional contract with Thetford Town in 2017. He then enjoyed stints with Mildenhall Town, Leiston, Bury Town and Norwich CBS before signing for West Bromwich Albion in 2021.

Castro spent just two years with the Baggies, before moving on to York City in 2023 and Cambridge City in 2025. He joined Eastbourne in March, before subsequently moving on to Real Massama.
