Finn Jeltsch: Man United’s stance on move for VfB Stuttgart defender

2

Manchester United’s defending against Hull City on the opening day of the 2026/27 season left a lot to be desired. The Red Devils conceded two set-piece goals and succumbed to a 2-0 defeat.

The 13-time Premier League champions invested heavily in midfield this summer, signing Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba. United also secured the services of free agent Karl Darlow to upgrade their goalkeeping department.

The Red Devils put all their focus into upgrading the attack last summer, but their backline remains their bane. Moreover, Harry Maguire is already in the final phase of his career, and the English giants have to lay down succession plans soon.

It now appears that United have identified an option for the job in the Bundesliga.

United want Finn Jeltsch

According to Caught Offside, United are keeping a close watch on VfB Stuttgart defender Finn Jeltsch. The report states: “Sources close to the agents industry have informed CaughtOffside that Man United have received positive scouting feedback on Jeltsch and are considering making official contact with Stuttgart.”

“Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus are also said to be following his development, while Bayern Munich have shown serious interest in keeping one of Germany’s brightest defensive talents in the Bundesliga.”

The report states that the Red Devils are enticed by the German defender’s attributes, but suggests that Bayern Munich are the favourites for his signature. It continues: “United are understood to admire his technical qualities and composure in possession, although Bayern Munich currently appear to be among the strongest contenders for his signature.”

Jeltsch settled at Stuttgart

Jeltsch rose through the ranks at Nuremberg before breaking into the first-team squad in 2023. Stuttgart came calling at the beginning of 2025, and the German defender has since become a mainstay for the Bundesliga club.

Last season, the 20 year old registered one assist in 37 appearances across all competitions.

However, Jeltsch has previously revealed that he is happy at the MHP Arena, so prising him away will not be a walk in the park. The player is under contract until 2030, so Stuttgart are under no pressure to let him go either.

The report, however, suggests that a move could be possible for €50 million.

Final Thoughts

Jeltsch fits the profile of players INEOS have targeted in recent times, while his calm demeanour and technical prowess also make him a fantastic long-term replacement for Maguire. However, United may be wary of paying over the odds for the relatively unproven youngster, and could instead be tempted to consider alternatives like Edmond Tapsoba.
