Fleetwood Town vs Arsenal postponement latest as weather warning issued

Arsenal are set to take on Fleetwood Town in the League Cup, but the Great British weather could be set to wreak havoc on the fixture

Arsenal's visit to Fleetwood Town in the League Cup is at threat of postponement. Storm Austen and Storm Boelo is continuing to hit Great Britain with severe wind and rain.

Unfortunately for Mikel Arteta's side, Fleetwood's Highbury Stadium is in Austen and Boelo's path of destruction. The Lancashire side's home ground has little cover for fans or the players, should the elements turn against them.

Several National League matches were postponed as a result of adverse weather conditions and there are concerns the Gunners' clash with the League Two relegation battlers could meet the same fate.

Fleetwood's neighbours Barrow recently saw their National League battle against Forest Green Rovers be postponed after just 14 minutes. The skies opened and unleashed a torrent of rain which instantly waterlogged the pitch.

Barrow's Holker Street home is only 17 miles away from Highbury Stadium, suggesting the Gunners' League Cup tie is just as vulnerable. A postponement would be a logistical nightmare for the EFL and Arsenal.

The Gunners already have six matches to play in November, including an away battle against Liverpool, a home tie against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and massive Premier League battles away to Newcastle United and at home to Manchester City.

Crowbarring in a hastily re-scheduled League Cup tie against Fleetwood, should it have to be re-arranged, would make things even harder for Arteta's side. Last year, Arsenal got to the later stages of all competitions and were beaten 2-0 in the League Cup final by City.

Arteta has demanded his players to not take the Cod Army lightly, despite the huge gap between the two sides. He said: "Our reputation, our pride, everything is in play.

"So every time you play a football match, and especially against a team in a different division, respect the game, respect every opponent because they deserve that, and then try to win and try to play a bit better than them.

"We know the risk, and in football, things can get very equal the moment you are able to match certain things, and that's why our basics and habits have to be through the roof to be able to win the game."

Fleetwood are currently 18th in League Two having endured a difficult start to the new season. They have won three, drawn five and lost five of their opening 13 matches.

In the previous round, they shocked Championship Sheffield United by narrowly beating them 1-0 at Highbury.
