Florian Wirtz's £116m Liverpool signing was a 'huge misunderstanding' and they will 'pull the plug' on him, says his countryman Didi Hamann

Former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Didi Hamann has suggested Florian Wirtz's move to the Reds has been a 'huge misunderstanding'.

Wirtz, who cost Liverpool £116million a little over a year ago, has struggled to hit the ground running at Anfield and come under heavy criticism for his performances this season.

Jamie Carragher has led the criticism, arguing that Wirtz's weekend performance against Bournemouth was 'one of the poorest I've ever seen him in a Liverpool shirt'.

Carragher added, on the Jamie Carragher podcast: 'I've been critical of the fact that he hasn't got the numbers. But normally when you watch Wirtz, he's neat and tidy, he keeps possession, there's things that you like. He gets out of a tight situation where you're normally expecting your player to lose the ball.

'But the reason I worry is, I don't think Wirtz is in poor form since he came to Liverpool. I actually think what we're seeing is what he is.'

Hamann, meanwhile, has explained he expects Wirtz to leave the club. When asked who he was looking forward to seeing play for Germany most this international break, he replied: 'The player I'm most interested in is Wirtz. Even the English have now realised that what happened between Liverpool and Wirtz looks like a huge misunderstanding.

'It will be interesting to see how he performs, because if things continue like this in Liverpool, they'll eventually pull the plug.

'We'd have to ask those involved. I can only judge what I see. And what I see is a player who cost a lot of money, played poorly last year, and has had another poor start this year.

'When you're bought for that much money, naturally, they want you to make the difference in the final third of the game. He's doing that far too rarely.'

An emotional Andy Robertson, meanwhile, has revealed that Wirtz and Alexander Isak found it hard to settle last season following the death of Diogo Jota.

'If I'm talking about the new signings, they're coming into a club that is heartbroken,' the former Reds defender said on The Overlap. 'And that is where I felt so sorry for these guys because they had signed and had signed for big money and all.

'If I'm talking about football, it took them months to settle in because we didn't care about football. That was the truth of it because we just lost one of your best mates in the changing room.'
