Folarin Balogun
enjoyed one of the most eventful nights of his career as the
United States
booked their place in the
World Cup
last 16, with the striker joining an exclusive club of players to both score and be sent off in the same
match.
The 24-year-old, who had already netted twice against Paraguay earlier in the tournament, put the hosts ahead against Bosnia and Herzegovina on the stroke of half-time. But his evening took a dramatic turn in the 64th minute when he was shown a straight red card after a VAR review judged his challenge on
Tarik Muharemovic
to be dangerous.
That unusual combination of scoring and being dismissed has only happened a handful of times in
history.
Perhaps the most famous example came in the 2006 final, when
Zinedine Zidane
marked his last international appearance by scoring a Panenka penalty against Italy before being sent off in extra time for his infamous headbutt on
Marco Materazzi
.
The most recent case before Balogun was Cameroon striker
Vincent Aboubakar
, who scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Brazil at the 2022
before receiving a second yellow card for removing his shirt during the celebrations.
Brazil legend
Ronaldinho
also features on the list after scoring his unforgettable free-kick against England in the 2002 quarter-finals before being dismissed for a reckless challenge on
David Beckham
The exclusive group is completed by Garrincha (1962), South Korea's Ha Seok-ju (1998) and Senegal midfielder
Salif Diao
(2002), with Balogun now adding his name to one of the tournament's more unusual statistical records.
