Gavi responds to Leandro Paredes after bearing the brunt of his anger in the final

However, now that emotions have cooled, the FC Barcelona midfielder believes the Argentine should not be suspended.

Following the final whistle, Paredes became involved in a heated exchange with Eric Garcia, before Gavi stepped in. The Spanish midfielder appeared to bear the brunt of the Argentine's frustration, as Paredes pushed him during the altercation.

Gavi's message about Leandro Paredes

Despite being at the center of the incident, Gavi insisted he does not want the Boca Juniors midfielder to miss matches because of what happened, although he acknowledged that professional players must set an example for children.

When asked whether Paredes should be suspended, he responded:

"No, honestly? I don't think he should be suspended (Leandro Paredes). I understand it's not a good image for kids, but football also has that more physical, more aggressive side. The logical thing would have been to send him off during the match, and that's it," Gavi told El Partidazo de COPE. "At the end of the day, it's football, and I think it should always stay that way."

Paredes and other Argentina players could face FIFA sanctions

Leandro Paredes could still face disciplinary action from FIFA following the incidents after the 2026 World Cup Final. Football's governing body is reviewing footage of the altercation and could open disciplinary proceedings against several Argentina players for violent conduct.

According to the FIFA Disciplinary Code, sanctions for offenses such as elbowing, punching, kicking, biting, spitting, or striking an opponent can carry a minimum three-match suspension, or a longer ban if deemed appropriate by the Disciplinary Committee.

Another player under scrutiny is Nahuel Molina. The Argentine fullback allegedly punched Rodri in the chest as the Spanish midfielder ran to celebrate the title with his teammates. The Manchester City star immediately turned back to confront Molina, escalating tensions between the two sides.

In the coming hours or days, FIFA is expected to determine whether it will formally open disciplinary proceedings and hand out sanctions to members of the Argentina national team.
