Gordon makes immediate impact on Barcelona debut as he hails 'dream' start

Anthony Gordon enjoyed a 'dream debut' for Barcelona on Sunday, as the England star made an instant impact. Gordon, 25, joined Barca in June for a cool £70million after three-and-a-half successful years at Newcastle.

The winger started on the bench as Barcelona began their La Liga title defence with a trip to Elche. Ex-Leeds forward Raphinha broke the deadlock with 14 minutes on the clock before summer signing Karim Adeyemi, preferred to Gordon in the starting XI, doubled Barcelona's lead on the brink of half-time.

Gordon entered the fray shortly after the hour mark and only needed two minutes to set Raphinha up for his second of the night. Four minutes later, Gordon burst through on goal but had Fermin Lopez alongside him.

The 25-year-old unselfishly chose to pass, giving his team-mate a simple finish. Lopez then made it 5-0 in the closing stages to bag himself a brace.

Gordon was asked after the win whether it was a 'dream debut' for both him and Adeyemi. "Of course," he replied. "I think you always want to win. It's always about the team first, especially with this club.

"But big congratulations to Kareem because he performed a great performance. He got his first goal. He worked really hard in some defensive transition. So, really happy for him."

Gordon seems to have already settled in Barcelona, too, saying: "I feel so good since I've arrived. I said in in the interview then that the guys have made me feel so welcome. I feel at home already. The city is amazing. The the people are so friendly and I think I would get better and better the longer I'm here."

Reflecting on the victory, he added: "It was a top performance. I think it was the perfect start, five goals scored and none conceded. We played some lovely football, scored great goals and, more importantly, I thought the defenders made some excellent last-minute challenges and blocks."

Hansi Flick was also pleased with his side's display, having won the La Liga title in each of his two seasons in charge. "We're delighted with the fantastic start we've made; it gives us confidence," the German said.

"I'm pleased with the 5–0 win and the three points. I was concerned about turnovers. We had to control the ball, and in the end, a clean sheet is fantastic, and five goals is great."

Barca's next game is at home to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday. Gordon will have the chance to play a competitive match at the Camp Nou in Barcelona colours for the first time.
