Chelsea are on the verge of one of the most impressive outgoing transfer deals of the summer.

Fabrizio Romano has tonight given his “here we go” stamp to the sale of Liam Delap to Nottingham Forest for a “fee around £45m.”

That is an amazing price, considering the Blues paid £30m for him a year ago, before he had a dreadful debut season which featured just two goals.

Forest entered negotiations in the last week after a summer which has seen a lot of sides linked with Delap, but few concrete efforts to sign him. A major fee like this, for a proper transfer and not a loan, is an incredible coup.

This is just another reminder that in the transfer trading game that Chelsea are now playing, buy price is everything. Delap’s release clause of £30m was so low for a young, English centre forward who has scored a few Premier League goals that even a dreadful subsequent season still means a profit.

Essentially, his value has fallen from £50m 0r so to £45m in the last year. Buying him so far below that was a no brainer for Chelsea in trading terms. The issue was how his lack of quality hurt the team on the pitch.
