“I apologise if I misjudged you”: Wayne Rooney backtracks, says sorry to Man United star

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has issued a surprise public apology to Benjamin Sesko after recently criticising him.

Rooney joined several of his fellow United legends last week in criticising Sesko after he missed the 1-1 draw with Fulham due to a shin injury.

It is thought that the issue is serious, although United are yet to provide a definitive update on how long Sesko will be sidelined as he recovers.

The injury, believed to be a recurrence of his pre-season problem, forced Sesko to withdraw from international duty with Slovenia.

Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt criticised Sesko, blaming him for his own misfortune by not wearing shin pads. Rooney joined in, saying that Sesko may have been wearing his “little stupid shin pads.” United’s record goalscorer lambasted Sesko for not sacrificing himself and playing through the pain barrier.

However, Rooney has now had a change of heart.

Rooney’s Sesko U-turn

Speaking on the Stick to United podcast, Rooney admitted that he was wrong and issued a heartfelt apology to Sesko.

The 40-year-old said, “It’s long-term Sesko?”

“Well, if it’s long-term, then I suppose I should apologise because…”

“So, I apologise, Sesko. I apologise if I misjudged you. Sorry.”

Rooney deserves credit for apologising to Sesko and retracting his comments, but it is yet another example of ex-players rushing to judgement and unfairly criticising current players without full knowledge of the circumstances.

The constant sniping from former players clearly takes its toll, and there is plenty of history: Lisandro Martinez and Paul Scholes have traded blows before, while Roy Keane and Bruno Fernandes have also clashed.

United are next in action on 10 October when they host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
