I left Tottenham for Brentford against my wishes - it left me very confused
A Spurs star had no choice but to leave for Brentford after his manager dropped a sudden bombshell

Former Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon was left mystified after being exiled by then-Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou ahead of the 2023/24 season.
The left-back, now 29, claimed he was told he was part of the Australian’s plans during pre-season. Postecoglou then made a U-turn, apparently out of nowhere, telling Reguilon to find a new club.
The former Spain international was left heartbroken and was forced to assess his options, eventually opting to join Manchester United. After his four-month loan stint at Old Trafford was cut short, he joined Brentford, where he played for the second half of the 2023/24 season and opened up about his baffling treatment by Spurs.

Reguilon, who now plays for Inter Miami in the MLS, will see his former sides face off this Saturday afternoon as Brentford host Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham in their opening Premier League game of the 2026/27 campaign.
Speaking about his sudden Tottenham exit, Reguilon told The Times in March 2024: "I didn’t understand and still don’t understand the situation. During pre-season I was very happy and Postecoglou was happy with me, also the staff. I was playing like a normal player, all the games.
"The week before, I went to see him. ‘You want me at the club?’ ‘Yes, I have to make a list and you are in my squad’. It was strange. The next day I was out of the training and I didn’t know what happened.

"I know I can play at Spurs, but in many aspects of football the player doesn’t have control. And I don’t want to stay to sit in the stadium watching. I am 27, I have too much football to live. I don’t understand why one day is ‘yes’ and the next day is ‘no’ but . . . I don’t think it's a performance reason, I think it’s another reason, this is football, this is business."
The Brentford move marked his third successive loan away, having joined Atletico Madrid the previous season in search of game time and then fallen in love with United. Reguilon played 16 Premier League games for the Bees as they finished 16th in the league.
The following season, he returned to Spurs and made regular appearances under Postecoglou as a substitute but was excluded from their 2024/25 Europa League-winning squad. He left the Lilywhites at the end of his contract last summer and signed for David Beckham’s Inter Miami in late 2025.
