Ian Wright 'gutted' Arsenal didn't sign Chelsea star with Mikel Arteta 'not happy'

Arsenal legend Ian Wright fears Mikel Arteta will not be happy with the club’s summer transfer business, ‘gutted’ the club did not sign Morgan Rogers ahead of Chelsea.

The Premier League champions strengthened their already formidable squad with Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa and Christos Tzolis all arriving in north London.

But the club also missed out on some of their biggest targets in attacking areas. Their Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in May underlined the difference in class in attacking positions between the two sides with Arsenal pursuing an elite forward this summer to close the gap.

The Gunners explored a move for Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr who rejected their interest to instead sign a new contract in the Spanish capital.

Arteta was also desperate to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid with the club pursuing a move throughout the summer despite it being made clear the Argentina international was holding out for a move to Barcelona.

Arsenal also missed out on Rogers, a top target for the club early in the window. But not long after England’s World Cup exit, Chelsea swooped to sign the 24-year-old in a huge £117million deal.

Arsenal’s title defence has got off to a perfect start with two wins from two with no goals conceded. But Wright believes there will be regrets over their inability to bring in a world class forward.

‘It’s not a disastrous window but if I’m Mikel, I wouldn’t be happy with how this window has gone simply because we’ve gone another window where we have not got that forward,’ Wright told Stick to Football.

‘Mikel has talked about getting players to take us to that level, he did it again after Paris, where we didn’t have that player to break them. That is the player Mikel wanted. They chased Vini until the end of the earth and left Morgan Rogers dangling.’

While Gary Neville argued on the show Arsenal did not need Rogers, Wright insisted Arteta would have seen him as a big part of the project, fearing the club’s pursuit of Vinicius Jr might have disillusioned the England star.
