Ipswich, Coventry and Hull City spend big as promoted clubs set apart in transfer market

Ipswich, Coventry and Hull City have spent with rare abandon this summer, setting the Premier League’s newcomers apart from much of Ligue 1.

According to L'Équipe, Ipswich’s outlay has exceeded €200m, Coventry’s is close to €150m, and Hull City have gone a little beyond €120m.

These clubs appeared to face few restraints. They were not forced to sell before buying, nor to trim wage bills in advance.

By contrast, Troyes and Le Mans, promoted to France’s top flight, had invested €1.7m and zero respectively only hours before Tuesday’s deadline.

The disparity underlines how the Premier League’s promoted sides have operated in a market of their own this summer.
