James Maddison backtracks on Roy Keane as Jamie Carragher confronts him after Tottenham win
James Maddison appeared to backtrack on his previous comments about Roy Keane in a confrontation with Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football

Jamie Carragher and James Maddison were involved in a hilarious confrontation on Monday, after the Liverpool legend asked the Tottenham midfielder who his favourite pundit was.
Maddison, 29, spoke to Sky Sports fresh after scoring a goal of the season contender during Spurs' 3-1 win against Coventry City. The England international, who was making his first start for 536 days following a nightmare Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury battle, curled a delightful first-time shot into the top corner from the edge of the box..
It was an emotional moment for Maddison as he ran across to celebrate and kissed the Tottenham badge. Maddison - who worked alongside Carragher on Monday Night Football last season - had a chat with the Sky Sports pundit post-match.
After talking about his goal and the win for Tottenham, Carragher then reminded Maddison of his previous comments where he was alleged to have said Keane was his favourite pundit. Carragher said: "James, you mentioned coming on the show, you were a friend of Monday Night Football. So I was a little bit surprised this week when you spoke to Sky Sports and you said your favourite pundit was Roy Keane!"

Maddison laughed before replying: "I knew that was coming. If you actually watch the full thing, Carra, I said he’s my favourite to watch, but I think your analysis is the best though."
Naming Keane as his favourite pundit to watch comes despite there being a tense history between the duo.
The Irishman first hit out at Maddison in February 2025 after Ian Wright claimed he was Tottenham's "missing link".
Speaking at the time, Keane told The Overlap: "People say Maddison's the man. When is he going to step up to the plate? He got relegated with Leicester and he'll get relegated with Spurs. Maddison isn't bad, when he's not at the darts, but let me tell you…
"If you think he's going to come back and get Spurs into the top six, you're in cuckoo land. He's good, he's a talented player. But if you're a player in the Spurs dressing room and Maddison's back in the squad, you wouldn't be looking and going 'oh Jesus – he's back today. We're going to be fine'."
Maddison had the last laugh, however, as he scored during Tottenham's 1-0 Premier League win against United and goaded the ex-United midfielder following Spurs' Europa League triumph in May 2025.
After Spurs won Europe's second-tier competition, Maddison said: "I wasn't gonna do any interviews, but I heard Roy Keane was in the studio tonight."
Maddison and Spurs are next in action when they make the trip to Chelsea on Saturday. They then host Crystal Palace before travelling to Leeds United before the November international break.
