Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher believes the Reds are targeting the wrong man in Bradley Barcola . Anfield chiefs are determined to add to their attacking options this summer following the exit of Mohamed Salah .

A number of names have been linked including Yan Diomande - who looks set to join Real Madrid - and Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams. But it appears that the Reds are now putting all of their effort into signing Barcola.

It has been reported that Liverpool are ready to submit their first bid for the 23-year-old, who is keen on a move, having turned down the chance to sign a new deal at the Parc des Princes. It has also been suggested that Liverpool may have to pay over £110m for his services.

Liverpool icon Carragher has given his take on a move, but believes Liverpool would be better served spending their money elsewhere.

"No, he plays on the opposite flank!" Carragher wrote on social media. "LFC currently have three players who could play from the left in Rio/Gakpo/Wirtz & no one who plays from the right."

Asked if one solution could potentially be to switch academy graduate Rio Ngumoha over to the right-hand side, the former defender did not believe that would work either.

"Well Rio has always played from the left so that’s obviously his best position," Carragher replied. "Gakpo should move really but who knows.

"I’m interested to see where Wirtz plays, if he’s 10 Dom plays CM. I’m not sure about that. Need a right winger desperately!"

Liverpool have of course already added to their attacking options this summer, with a move for Osasuna’s Victor Munoz. The World Cup winner is set to arrive at Liverpool after a season in which he scored seven goals for the Spanish side in all competitions.

Asked if he had a number in his mind of how many players he would want to sign last week, boss Andoni Iraola replied: “No, I think it’s difficult to say a number when the market is open, and you have to be always open to new options to improve the squad.

“There are obvious situations that we know where we need to sign players. A winger, for example – we definitely need to sign a winger.

“But there are other situations that we will have to analyse what the market gives you, what’s the cost, how we also see the players we have. We have some tricky positions where we have injured players that we trust but is still not the ideal situation. So, it will depend on a lot of things.”
