Leeds United could move for Matthieu Epolo as Marseille ‘to pull’ interest

Leeds United could have a free run to sign Standard Liege goalkeeper Matthieu Epolo, with Marseille expected to step back, according to Get French Football News, although they remain outside contenders. The 21-year-old is being considered as back-up to James Trafford.

Leeds paid £40million to sign the former Manchester City player, who is now the undisputed No. 1 at Elland Road. Lucas Perri has been permitted to leave and has arrived in Italy ahead of a move to Torino.

Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Michael Zetterer arrived for a medical at Leeds and is expected to be unveiled soon. Epolo could compete with the 31-year-old German if he arrives.

Karl Darlow departed for Manchester United earlier in the summer, while Alex Cairns remains in situ. A double move for Zetterer and Epolo would hand Daniel Farke contrasting profiles behind Trafford.

Farke has previously said he wanted a top-class goalkeeper, that Leeds are convinced by Trafford, and that although he lacked league minutes last season and had a short pre-season due to World Cup involvement, he will be given time to settle. The head coach also believes Trafford can become outstanding for Leeds and, in the medium to long term, potentially England’s No. 1.

Epolo has also been linked with Toulouse, but their first-choice keeper now looks likely to stay. If Trafford is unavailable, Farke would have the choice between Zetterer’s experience and Epolo’s promise.
