Leeds United ‘to keep’ Brenden Aaronson in January despite limited role

Leeds United intend to keep Brenden Aaronson beyond January, with a post on X saying the club have no plans to sanction a winter exit and that he remains part of the project.

The 25-year-old began the campaign as a starter in the first two Premier League matches, then made three substitute appearances. He scored against Chelsea and was not named in the United States squad this month. That followed a productive pre-season, including goals against Liverpool and Manchester United.

After his strongest campaign last term, he agreed a new deal in the summer that runs to June 2029. Even so, criticism has persisted.

He originally joined in Jesse Marsch’s first summer window for £25m on a five-year contract. By amortisation terms, he is now £20m into that initial fee.

A summer sale above £5m would have represented an accounting profit, and in January anything north of £2.5m would do the same. Leeds are unlikely to recoup the original outlay, but the player is regarded as worth comfortably more than those thresholds.
