Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has sent an emotional message to Lionel Messi following the announcement of his retirement from international football.

Messi retirement

On Monday, Messi confirmed that he has stepped away from the Argentina national team and international football.

Having captained Argentina to World Cup triumph in Qatar 2022, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner secured the one trophy that had eluded him, cementing his status as the sport’s ultimate icon.

Messi released a statement noting that the “time has come” for him to call it quits.

The football great leaves with a record-breaking legacy of 125 goals from 207 games. No Argentine has played or scored more for their country.

In addition to winning the World Cup, Messi also lifted the Copa America in 2021 and 2024.

In the wake of his father’s tragic death, Messi first hinted at stepping away from the international stage, and he has now made that decision official, committing his remaining years solely to Inter Miami.

Tributes have been pouring in for Messi and his international teammate, Martinez, was not left behind.
