Liverpool: Cody Gakpo 'chooses next club' as Tottenham learn new transfer decision

Liverpool star set to join Premier League rivals in Spurs blow

That is according to David Ornstein, who reported on Saturday evening that the Dutchman was closing in on a switch to the Etihad Stadium.

It will come as a major blow for Tottenham, who had identified the forward as a top target going into the final days of the summer transfer window.

But after City sold Savio to the north Londoners for £75million, they appear to have moved quickly to try and land Gakpo.

The 27-year-old was, according to Ornstein, facing a three-way decision, which included staying at Anfield, moving to Spurs, or joining City.

He has chosen the latter, where he will compete for a place across the frontline.

Gakpo has played mostly off the left flank for Liverpool since his move from PSV Eindhoven, but he can also operate as a centre-forward, where City are now light after Omar Marmoush followed Savio to Tottenham on an initial loan deal that also includes a £50million obligation to buy.

The Dutch international is thought to have agreed personal terms with City, who are now working to seal a deal with their Premier League rivals.

Liverpool will likely sanction Gakpo’s exit after they struck an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola, the Reds’ top target this summer, in a deal worth up to £123m.

Gakpo could become the latest high-profile departure from Merseyside this summer, after Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah all left on free transfers, while Curtis Jones was sold to Inter Milan.
